Painting Large

"Forgotten Oaths"  48"x72"

My largest encaustic to date. It took 2 pounds of wax just to get a base coat on it. There were at least 4 more pounds of various colored wax applied before it was finished. One thing you can't do with large work that you can do with the small pieces is have the entire surface molten at the same time. I had to learn to work in 18" square sections at a time.

Hi! I'm Chris and this is an open forum about encaustic. Please converse freely about this extraordinary medium. In the 11 years that I have painted exclusively with encaustic I have seen that everyone does it differently. Go figure.  I think that is because wax is so forgiving. It allows you to change your mind in the middle of the painting or add and subtract at will.
